Martin Stranka’s emotive photography beautifully captures a fantastic realm between dreaming and waking. A self-taught professional photographer, his naturally creative process was born of a desire to express himself. Martin has described his ethereal work as a continuing, coherent diary of pages of his life, bringing his dreams to reality, one beautiful moment at a time. His (distinctive and sophisticated) ability to evoke emotion has quickly earned him a global following and over 40 international photography awards.
Born in the Czech Republic, Martin currently lives in Prague. A true nature lover, he spends time walking through the trees and finding new and unique places, often combining landscapes with portraits he has taken in the studio or outside using lighting. He strives to capture something infinite and eternal in his work, transcending reality. Many people have said they can identify with his emotive artwork as the moods he captures seem to speak universally. It’s clear that he’s passionate about his art and thoroughly enjoys the creative process.
His interest in portrait photography evolved from the idea that Man is, “constantly pushed flat, part of a group.” His passionate work shows an internal dialogue that describes a personal communication that is relatable…seeming to be waking memories in which you can find yourself. He often portrays people floating or levitating, giving the the viewer’s imagination freedom to find parallels between the material and emotional worlds within us all. This abstract symbolism is Martin’s way of conveying a message of hope. Color Me Impressed by his poetic ability to create art that is full of emotion, feeling, internal communication, balance, and peace.
As Martin explains:
“Try to imagine the story in a sentence. Try to imagine the story in a word. Can you imagine the whole story in one photo? That is my answer. Here you can find answers to your question. Each photograph is captured with tens, hundreds, thousands of feelings which I felt at that moment. And believe me, even though it may not initially appear, very often they were feeling full of hope. It is also one of the things that fascinates me still in the photo. How can a picture says so many words, sometimes more than could ever a whole book. Every single photo has its own story behind. One photo, one story, one photo shooting.”
Drawing motivation from daily life experiences, he finds Autumn to be his favorite season and can’t create without music, listening to artists such as Lisa Gerrard, Olafur Arnalds, Asaf Avidan, Antony and the Johnsons or Sigur Rós. Simple beauty like sparkling grains of dust floating in the light of sunset or leaves falling from the trees, stimulate his creativity. Drawn more to paintings than photographs, he is moved by the works of artist Jeremy Geddes (http://www.jeremygeddesart.com) and contemporary painter Xhixix (http://xhxix.tumblr.com/). He also finds great inspiration in the visionary photography of Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison (http://www.parkeharrison.com).
In the near future, his focus is on staying happy and building his own studio in Prague. He recently published his first book, „I AM.“ He continues working on numerous projects for book publishers and musicians, and his exhibitions have been held around the world. He has said that photography is the best way for him to communicate and to make others happy. We thoroughly enjoy his self-expression.
Color Me Impressed by this artist on the rise! We look forward to his next exhibit.
As Martin quotes:
“Be yourself, loved by a few, and not understood by the rest.”
